Sulphur, La. -

To empower “new or existing small businesses and entrepreneurs with the right tools to start, grow or expand their businesses” is the purpose of the Louisiana Small Business Development Center (LSBDC) at McNeese State University.
“In any given year, millions of small businesses are started. In any given year, millions of small businesses are closed,” said Donna Little, Center Director, at Thursday’s West Calcasieu Association of Commerce (WCAC) luncheon.
“Small Business Development Centers help people start a small business, help people who have a small business solve problems or grow or just think about their future.”
According to Little, there are three reasons why a small business closes: failure to plan, becoming of interest to a larger competitor who buys the owner out, or the owner realizing that the business is not right for them. However, Little believes that running a small business can be an extremely rewarding experience for those who plan ahead and realize the work and the sacrifices involved.
“Running a small business is a lot of work,” said Little.
“When you run the business, you do whatever it takes to get the business going.”
For future or existing small business owners, the consultants at the Center can assist with business plans, financial projections, marketing plans, loan packages, finding capital, business training and specialized services, such as technology or international trade.
“We sit down one on one with individuals and talk them through the planning process. We ask the difficult questions,” said Little.
“We want you to be successful.”
There is no charge for the consulting, however, there is usually a small fee for business and training workshops or seminars. Services are confidential and the Center works with people for as long as they need them.
“People start small businesses because of the dream in their hearts, the drive in their souls. We want to help them express that.”
