SULPHUR — The gates for next year's Cal-Cam Fair will open up at a new location. The fair's board agreed Tuesday, Dec. 10, to move the 2014 fair — its 90th — to the grounds of the West Cal Arena and West Calcasieu Events Center in south Sulphur. It is scheduled for Oct. 15-19, 2014.
The move will bring all of the fair's events back together in one location. In 2006, the fair's livestock show was moved to the arena but the carnival, pageants and entertainment stayed at the Lewis Street fairgrounds.
"We are bringing it all back together," said Wilridge Doucet, board president. "And we are looking to bring back things we had before the [fairground] buildings were destroyed [by Hurricane Rita]."
Doucet said that the general exhibition will be back and held at the West Calcasieu Events Center. The board is also looking at plans for cooking and baking competitions, among others.
As for the Lewis Street fairgrounds, Doucet said that the property will continue to be maintained and utilized for rental purposes.
Adrian Moreno, Executive Director of the West Cal Arena and West Calcasieu Events Center, is pleased to welcome the long-running fair to his facilities.
"We will do what we can to accommodate them and help them grow," he said.
