  • Tors edge Pineville at Gator Shoot-out

  • LAKE CHARLES - The Sulphur Tors ended a three-game slide on Friday with 38-35 win over Pineville at the LaGrange Gator Shoot-out.

  • The Sulphur Tors ended a three-game slide on Friday with 38-35 win over Pineville at the LaGrange Gator Shoot-out.
    Sulphur had to hold off a late rally to seal the win. Down 38-26 with 2:43 to go, the Rebels chipped away at the Tors lead starting with a three by Josh Hayward. Larue hit a pair of free throws with 28 seconds left and Keandre Rockett got a putback on a missed three by Hayward with three seconds left to get the Rebels within three, 38-35. Sulphur went to the free throw line twice in the final three seconds and missed both but it didn’t matter in the end as the Rebels were never able to get a game tying shot off.
    After the first quartered ended in a 6-6 tie, the Sulphur Tors started to pull away with a 7-0 run keyed by a pair of free throws from Derrick Gallion and five points from senior forward Taran Winston.
    Pineville’s T.J. Larue cut the Tors’ lead to 15-14 with a three-pointer from the corner with a 1:10 left in the first half but Sulphur opened up the third quarter with a 9-0 run.  The Tors led by as many as 11 in the third with six points from Dillon Dees and nine from Gallion.
    Gallion led the Tors with 15 points while Winston finished with 9. Rockett led LaGrange with 15 and Larue chipped in 10 points.
    Sulphur will be on the road Tuesday for a rematch with St. Louis Catholic. The Saints beat the Tors 63-53 on November 27th in the St. Louis tournament.
    The Sulphur Tors opened up the LaGrange Gator Shoot-out with a tough 42-41 loss to St. Martinville.
    Sulphur led 31-25 heading into the final quarter but could not hold on as they were outscored 17-10 over the final eight minutes.
    St. Martinville’s Bradley Savoy led all scorers with 14 points including eight in the deciding fourth quarter.
    Taran Winston was the top scorer for the Tors with 12 points while Gavin Richard finished with 10.
