  • SULPHUR — Battling near freezing temperatures and a cold north wind for most of the weekend the Sulphur Tors went 3-0-1 to win their own 26th annual Sulphur Tornado Soccer tournament.
”It was kind of similar to last weekend,” Sulphur head coach Trevor Foolkes said. “Defensively we did really good.
“Beaumont-Kelly scored on a set play. When it comes to set plays we need to focus better. I am overall happy with the guys. We are really pleased with where the guys are at right now.”
The Tors (7-1-3) were declared the winner of the round-robin tournament. It was the Tors’ best finish in their own tournament since reaching the finals in 2007.
Sulphur wrapped up their undefeated run through the tournament Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 win over New Iberia. Ashton Reel and Jacob Walsh scored for the Tors while Micah Taylor and Reel were credited with assists.
Bradley Basco had two saves and has allowed just five goals in 11 games.
Beaumont-Kelly was the only team that managed to score on the Tors but were denied a win on Saturday when Taylor headed the ball in on a free kick by Ruston Logan with 10 seconds left in the game.
Sulphur opened up the tournament on Friday with a 2-0 shutout of their archrival Barbe at Matt Walker Memorial Stadium.
Reel and Jacob Boyles accounted for the Tors’ goals on Thursday.
Despite near freezing temperatures, the Sulphur Tors shut out Carencro 3-0 on Friday.
Reel and Andre Vincent score the Tors first two goals on assists by Jacob Walsh and Tyler O’Pry for a 2-0 halftime lead.
Taylor scored Sulphur’s third goal on an assist from Logan in the second half.
