  • LAKE CHARLES — McNeese State University and Southwest Louisiana Technical Community College (SOWELA) signed an agreement that will make the McNeese Recreational Sports Complex and the university's intramural sports program available to current students, faculty and staff at SOWELA.
"The level of higher education collaboration in Southwest Louisiana is unrivaled in the state," said Dr. Neil Aspinwall, chancellor. "This agreement with McNeese immediately makes several million dollars worth of sporting facilities available to current SOWELA students and employees."
McNeese President Dr. Philip Williams added, "We will continue to identify ways to collaborate that benefit each institution, our students and the educational interests of Southwest Louisiana."
The agreement provides SOWELA students and personnel with access to the recreational sports facilities and services at the same rate charged to McNeese faculty, staff and students — currently $30 per semester.
"We are excited about this agreement because it provides a benefit to SOWELA employees while also enhancing the student life experience for students," said Dr. Rick Bateman, vice chancellor of academic affairs and student success.
Dr. Jeanne Daboval, provost and vice president for academic and student affairs at McNeese, said, "We see this agreement as an opportunity to strengthen the post-secondary experience for SOWELA students while also introducing university services to potential transfers."
SOWELA faculty, staff and students can immediately register to begin utilizing McNeese's recreational facilities and services. The college will begin to promote intramural athletic teams beginning with the spring 2014 semester.
The McNeese Recreational Center includes an Olympic-sized swimming pool, racquetball courts, basketball courts, indoor track and wellness center that includes a free weight area, cardiovascular theatre with individual entertainment options and exercise equipment.
