Sulphur High School 9th Grade Campus made history on Monday when it became the first school in this area to launch the CITGO Earth Keepers School Recycling Program.
Students and staff filled the gymnasium for a kick-off pep rally in which they learned the difference between garbage and recyclable items as well as how to properly dispose of recyclables.
Special receptacles are being placed throughout the school by CITGO which will then be picked up by Waste Management each Monday. Also taking part in the rally were Adam and Diego from the CITGO Fueling Good Road Show. Students were waving foam #1 hands and vying for 'Earth Keepers' tee shirts which were shot out of a hand-held cannon or tossed to the crowd by students.
The CITGO Earth Keepers recycling program is being sponsored by CITGO, with such partners as the City of Sulphur, the Calcasieu Parish School Board, Waste Management and Stine, to promote recycling throughout the Sulphur community, including the schools. The program includes a permanent recycling bin at Stine in Sulphur as well as a school-based recycling program in all Sulphur area schools.
